Founded in 1979, America's Second Harvest today distributes nearly two billion pounds of food to more than 200 regional food banks in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Second Harvest feeds over
23 million hungry Americans a year. Through our local food bank in Nashville, TN, we have learned about the tremendous need in our area and the enormous number of regional entities that distribute food and basic supplies provided by Second Harvest. Amongst the recipients are not only many children, the elderly, unemployed, disabled, homeless, and victims of natural disaster, but also the working poor, whose number seem to grow every year. DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS
(MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES)
France & USA
Since its founding in 1971, Doctors Without Borders has been one of the first Aid Agencies to respond to almost every natural disaster and human conflict around the world. From the Nicaragua earthquake in 1972 to the genocide
in Darfur, Sudan in 2005, these medics of mercy have often risk their lives in order to save others. It is because of this unwavering dedication that in 1999 DWB received the Nobel Peace Prize. We can think of no other Non-Governmental Agency that deserves our admiration and support more. For an overview of DWB's many worldwide programs and commitments, please visit:
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Launched in 1961 by British Lawyer Benenson with the publication of an article "The Forgotten Prisoners" AI has become a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. At the latest count, there were more than 1.8 million members, supporters and subscribers in over 150 countries and in every region of the world. Although they come from many different backgrounds and have widely different political and religious beliefs, they are united by a determination to work for a world where everyone enjoys human rights. One of AI's programs, the letter writing campaign conducted by the volunteer "Freedom Writers" on behalf of political prisoners, has been particularly successful. Many prisoners of conscience have testified how those letters - mailed to governments - played a key role in their eventual release and that knowing they were not forgotten, helped sustain them during their ordeal.
